Know what broadband deal you want

Whatever you want from your broadband connection, you’ll want the best price. However, with so much choice available, you can find yourself confused about which deal to choose. It is tempting to take the first deal on offer without considering all the options, but you could find you are spending more on your broadband than you need to. Read on for advice on getting the best broadband deal.

Is speed a big deal?

With providers now offering higher and higher download speeds, it is natural to assume that fastest is best. However the higher the speed the higher the cost. If you are only planning to use your broadband to browse the web, send and receive emails and occasionally download a music or video track, you don’t need to pay for the biggest download speed; a standard 1MB package will be enough for you.

Do you need extras with your broadband deal?

Broadband deals often offer extra features such as virus protection. While some are free, others are added for an extra charge. Always check the small print of the deal: maybe a free offer is only available for a trial period, maybe you can get the extra feature cheaper as a separate package.

Don’t get caught in the cheap broadband penalty box

This can be a case that a cheap deal could cost you more in the long run. Some broadband providers are now putting download restrictions on their cheaper broadband deals, limiting the amount of downloading you can carry out either in a month or during peak periods. Everything you do with your broadband from browsing the web, to sending email to downloading files will add to your total download, so check the package’s cap before signing on the dotted line. If you exceed the package’s limit, you will face a financial penalty or suspension of your service.

Help: why you could pay more

The vast majority of broadband providers will offer a phone number for customer support. However the key difference is how you will be charged for calling that number. Some charge at a premium rate, some at a local rate and some are free. If you are new to broadband and want the security of calling the help number, check the provider’s call charge. Or what you save on your broadband deal you could spend on your phone bill.
