Broadband phone
Using broadband as a phone
As technology has allowed us to use broadband to send written messages in seconds whether via email, instant messaging or by sending files, new technology has been developed to use broadband to make phone calls across the globe.
The technology behind broadband phone calls is known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
How do you make broadband phone calls with VoIP?
To make or receive VoIP phone calls, you must have internet access. With some suppliers you will need your PC on to make and receive calls, and with others you don’t.
You can either call an ordinary phone number, or use a shorter number to dial someone using the same VoIP service provider direct. The software running on your computer, phone, or phone converter box sends a message that says first that a call is beginning, then the number dialled.
Once your call is answered you speak into a microphone and your voice is converted to a digital signal, which is compressed so less bandwidth is needed for the call.
The data is separated into packets, and sent instantly over your internet connection.
Can I call anyone with broadband phone?
It depends on the service you have. If your service is internet only you cannot dial normal phone numbers.
However services with a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) e.g. BT Broadband Voice, you can phone most phone numbers. It is very important to note you cannot call 999 using VoIP at present with the majority of providers. Please ensure you have another means to call the emergency services. Individual providers may have other restrictions.
