18th July 2006: Sky adds heat to the free broadband market
Sky has announced that it will now offer free broadband to all its eight millions customers. However the offer will initially only be available to customers living in unbundled areas. Customers who do not live in an unbundled area will be offered a competitively priced connection of up to 8Mb for £17.99 a month. Once Local Loop Unbundling reaches their home exchange, they will be able to move to free broadband.
Tim Wolfenden, Senior Product Manager at comparison and switching service uSwitch.com comments: “The Sky offer could shake the broadband market up dramatically, because they have 4 million customers who are currently with another provider, and who very soon are going to be able to turn around to that provider and say ‘Why should I carry on paying for my internet connection?’.”
Both Orange and TalkTalk have announced free broadband packages so far in 2006. Orange’s offer is linked to their mobile service while TalkTalk is linked to their Talk3 International plan.
