Broadband guide
The broadband revolution
Home internet access has changed beyond recognition over the past two or three years. Long gone are the days of engaged phone lines and dropped connections, lost hours waiting for websites to load. Today, you can download huge files in mere seconds, most websites take (very nearly) no time at all to load, and whenever your computer is on, the internet is on too.
Signing up to a broadband provider
Signing up for broadband on uSwitch.com is very quick and simple, and should only take a few minutes. The basic steps in the signing up process are:
- Enter your postcode and home phone number and answer some quick questions on our calculator. This will only take a couple of minutes
- View your results; we will search for the best broadband packages for you
- You will be directed to your chosen provider’s site to enter your details and finalise your switch
- If you like we will send you information about your switch and you can contact us if there are any problems with your broadband switch
- Then your new broadband provider will contact you to confirm the date your new service will commence. This usually takes between one and three weeks
Receiving ADSL and cable broadband in your home
Most home users receive broadband via the following two methods:
ADSL broadband
Your analogue BT line is converted into an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line at your home and at the BT phone exchange.
Cable broadband
Your home computer is connected to the internet via a high speed cable modem using a cable network.
Make the best connection
Signing up to the best broadband package could give you a cheaper subscription, more speed and better services.
