How to compare and switch broadband

It's easy to switch broadband provider with uSwitch - we take the hard work out of comparing packages by showing you the deals available. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps.

Switching broadband should only take about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your new provider's application process.

What you'll need to have ready

  • Your full postcode.
  • Your landline phone number (this is not essential, but it will help us to make our comparison.
  • Your MAC code (migration access code). This is a unique serial number that identifies your connection to your local exchange and enables your provider to switch your connection to its service. You can get your MAC code from your existing broadband provider. Under new Ofcom rules, all providers have to supply you with your MAC code within 5 working days of your request. You do not need a MAC code if you're switching from or to a cable broadband connection.
  • Your bank details to give to your new provider.

Step 1: tell us your postcode

Tell us your postcode so that we can check what broadband packages are available in your area. Prices may vary depending on where you live. You also have the option of giving us your phone number, which will help us when we make our comparison.

You then choose which broadband packages you want to compare, including broadband-only packages and bundled phone/digital TV deals.

Step 2: compare packages and pick your plan

Our impartial comparison shows you broadband packages which are available in your area, ranked according to your criteria - for example, by lowest monthly cost or fastest speed. You'll also be able to see customer satisfaction ratings for each provider.

You can then pick the broadband package that suits you.

Step 3: see a summary of the package you've chosen and give us your contact details

So that you know exactly what you're switching to, we'll show you a summary giving details of the plan you've chosen.

We'll also ask for your name and email address so that we can send you details of your chosen broadband package. Plus, you can choose to sign-up for our free weekly newsletter, featuring the latest money-saving deals and expert advice.

Step 4: apply to switch to your new provider

You'll be taken to the website of your new provider, where you complete the application process.

As well as your MAC code, you are likely to need your bank details to do this. Applications should only take 5 minutes or so, depending on the provider.

Your new provider will then sign you up to their service.

What happens afterwards?
