• companies often have special discounts for customers buying online
• most of the big insurers are now online, and there are lots of companies that only sell online – so you have access to a very wide range of insurers
• getting a quote online is a lot easier than filling out lots of boring forms by hand
• when you fill out an online car insurance form your quote will usually be returned to you straight away

Buying car insurance online might not be ideal for everyone though, so it’s worthwhile knowing the pitfalls:

• not every insurer is online yet, so you can’t get a comprehensive list of quotes
• while online insurance forms are easy to fill in, it’s difficult for the companies to cover all possible circumstances and criteria. This means quotes for some people may not be 100% accurate, and they might need to answer more questions over the phone
