Tax and owing money to HM Revenue & Customs
You should check you are paying the correct amount of tax so that you will not be hit with an unexpected demand at the end of the financial year.
What to do
If you receive a bill from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) that you can’t pay, you should contact them to discuss your difficulties and options.

What the HM Revenue & Customs will do
If they agree that you genuinely can’t pay, they’ll do what they can to help, such as allowing you more time to pay the tax you owe.
Worst case scenario
If you don’t reach an agreement, HM Revenue & Customs can:
- sell your posessions at auction
- summons you to the Magistrates’ Court (if the debt is less than £2,000)
- take County Court proceedings against you which could result in a custodial sentence
