Switch on to digital with uSwitch.com
Between 2008 and 2012 the government will be switching off all analogue TV transmitters, so everyone in the UK will need to have suitable digital TV equipment. To prepare in advance, find out what your best digital deals are on uSwitch.com.
Why exactly do we have to switch?
The current, much loved analogue TV system dates back to the 1920s, is incompatible with digital technology – and generally rather old fashioned! So that more people can get digital TV – which is clearer, gives you more channels, and generally a better viewing experience, the government needs to switch off all the old analogue transmission. They are doing this over a phased, national roll-out from 2008, to reduce impact on viewers.
How do I get digital TV?
Nearly 70% of the population has digital TV receiving equipment, and those that don’t will need to pay a relatively small amount in exchange for a greatly enhanced television service. However, if you are worried about the cost of switching, use uSwitch.com to find your cheapest digital TV deal. You may find it costs you a lot less than you think, and you'll be able to compare the packages to find one that's right for you.
What are the benefits of digital TV?
The main benefit of digital TV is that it offers a greater variety of programming choice from terrestrial and paid for providers. However, it also offers the following for a truly 21st century viewing experience:
- improved picture (eg, no ghosting effects, true widescreen)
- more TV and new digital only radio channels
- a ‘red button’ enhanced information services
Interactive features are also being developed to allow everyone to access health advice, shopping, education, holidays, text messages, email, auctions, games and food delivered to your home, all through their TV.
