Broadband internet TV

Digital broadband TV is set to be the next big thing in broadcasting. The BBC, BT and Sky are all forecast to launch internet TV in 2006. Internet TV uses the high speed ADSL broadband network to transmit digital TV signals down telephone lines.

Tiscali is currently the main provider of digital broadband internet TV and is currently trialling its service in London, with the intention of rolling the service to a wider audience in the future.

UK coverage for digital broadband internet TV is limited to small trial areas at present, such as BBC Hull in the Humber area, but there are plans to expand services nationwide in 2006. To receive digital broadband internet TV you need a BT telephone line and live in an area where the local telephone exchange is broadband-enabled.

The main difference with this type of digital technology is that instead of having to watch specific movies or programmes when they are broadcast, you can watch them any time you choose. You can also choose to replay, pause, stop or re-wind, and fast-forward programmes when you wish.

Broadband television through an ADSL line is not to be confused with watching TV programs via the internet on your PC. They are two different systems. Many channels such as the BBC now stream some of their programs online – so you can watch them at your convenience. These are only selected programs, and you usually need a broadband connection to be able to view them properly. They are sometimes free, though Channel 4 have started charging viewers 99p to watch episodes of their premium shows, such as Lost.

The digital broadband internet TV provider will install a set top box and modem connection to your existing phone socket. No dish, cable connection, or video recorder is required.

The BBC currently offers film clips of popular shows, news alerts and live radio over its website, free for you to watch on your computer. Channel 4 also offers many of its most popular shows online – some of which you’ll need to pay for. ITV also offers some limited broadband content.

BT should be moving into internet TV in 2006/07 with BT vision, a combined internet and Freeview service. There are several other companies considering moving into the UK market with subscription internet TV services.
