Energy efficiency

With traditional energy resources on the decline and rising fuel prices and pollution levels, it is vital that we all play our part in conserving energy. Adopting the following efficiency measures means you do your bit for the planet while saving up to £250 a year.

Your loft
Up to 25% of your home's heat can be lost if you do not insulate your loft. It's best to insulate your loft to a depth of 250mm (10" inches).

Your hot water tank & pipes
Insulating your tank and pipes can keep your water hot for longer and prevent pipes freezing in cold weather. Fitting a thick, hot water tank jacket can cut heat loss by up to 75% from your hot water tank.

Cavity wall insulation
Cavity wall insulation reduces the heat loss through the walls by up to 40%, thus giving significant savings in heating costs. If you are worried that you cannot afford cavity insulation, contact your local council or energy supplier as they may offer grants to help you.

Cut out the draughts
You'd be amazed how much the draught from a window or door can lower the room temperature. Sealing all draughts around windows and doors will keep you warmer and lower the cost of your bills.

Mind the gap
Almost 11% of your home's heat is lost through gaps in the floorboards and skirting. Fill these in and save about £10 a year.

Load it up
Only use your dishwasher and washing machine when you have a full load. You'll save energy and water.

Switch your light bulbs
To energy saving light bulbs. Not only do they last longer but you can save up to £7 a year for each bulb.

Turn it off
Don’t leave your electrical appliances such as TVs and DVD players on stand by.

Turn it down
Turning down the heating by just one degree reduces CO2 emissions and can save you around £30 a year.

• Close your curtains when it gets dark to keep the heat in the room

• Your letter box can be letting in a nasty draught. Fit a nylon brush seal or spring flap

• Layer your clothing. Lots of small, thin layers will keep you warmer than one bulky jumper. If you get too hot, just remove a layer
