Gas & electricity regulators

What do energy consumer organisations do?

Both Ofgem and energywatch offer information, support and advice for consumers in dealing with gas and electricity suppliers. Together, they run Energy Smart, a campaign to get people using less energy, get the best deal and pay by the cheapest method. As part of this, they recommend switching to the cheapest supplier.

What can they do for you?

energywatch offers practical information on safety and switching your gas & electricity supplier. It can also intervene on your behalf if you've followed your supplier's complaints procedure and are dissatisfied with the response. Ofgem is the regulator for the gas and electricity industries. Since 1999, Ofgem has taken steps to open up the energy markets and ensure fair competition between suppliers.

Ofgem and the energy industry

Ofgem has helped reduce wholesale electricity prices and works towards a competitive energy market. It aims to protect the consumer against mis-selling (e.g. where a supplier gives you misleading or false information to encourage you to switch) and situations where suppliers unfairly prevent you from switching away. But to take advantage of this, you need to know which supplier can offer you the cheapest gas & electricity – Ofgem doesn’t offer this service. That’s where we come in – we help you switch and save on your energy bills.
