26th April 2007: British Gas announces a second price cut
British Gas has shaken up the energy market again by announcing its second price cut for 2007.
British Gas customers will see their bills fall by an average of £40, following a 6% drop in its electricity prices and a 3% drop in its gas prices. The new prices take effect immediately but only affect those on British Gas’s standard or price guarantee plans – those on online deals will not see their prices drop.
According to figures from uSwitch.com, these cuts make British Gas the third cheapest supplier for standard plans across the country, behind Scottish and Southern Energy and npower. 1
Geoff Slaughter, Energy Product Manager at uSwitch.com, said “this second cut by British Gas demonstrates that consumer power really does exist. It’s refreshing to see British Gas bringing the fight back to the energy market and we hope to see other providers follow suit quickly.
“The key thing now for consumers is not to become complacent about price cuts. We know that there is still scope for plenty more and it’s only by consumers piling the pressure on that the suppliers will start digging a bit deeper into their pockets. It’s vital for consumers to be turned on to switching and to make sure they are getting the best deal for them.”
1 Based on a medium usage (20,500 kWhs gas, 3,300 kWhs electricity) customer averaged across all regions.
