Sutton and East Surrey Water

Sutton and East Surrey Water supplies a largely rural area of 834 square kilometres, with a population of approximately 650,000 people. The area extends from Morden and South Croydon in the north to Gatwick Airport in the south and from Cobham, Leatherhead and Dorking in the west to Edenbridge and Bough Beech in the east.

The history of Sutton and East Surrey Water can be traced back to the 1800s, when water was first supplied to homes in the area.

Today, Sutton and East Surrey Water has 280 staff and supplies around 270,000 connected properties. This customer base has a split of approximately 252,000 domestic and 18,000 commercial customers.

Sutton and East Surrey Water derives 85% of its water supply from groundwater and the other 15% is drawn from one reservoir at Bough Beech. Sutton and East Surrey Water then supplies the water via nine treatment works, 36 service reservoirs or towers, 60 pumping stations and 3,280km of water mains.

Sutton and East Surrey Water is a water only supplier, so Sutton and East Surrey Water customers will have their sewerage services supplied by Southern Water or Thames Water, depending on where they live in the water supply region.

As two separate companies provide water and sewerage services, Sutton and East Surrey Water customers may receive separate bills for each service or Sutton and East Surrey Water may bill them for both services and collect the money on behalf of the sewerage company.

To be classed as wholesome, water must comply with the water quality standards set out in the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989.

In 2003, 21,112 tests were carried out on samples taken by Sutton and East Surrey Water. 99.76% of these tests complied with the Regulations (source: http://www.dwi.gov.uk).
