Every 15 seconds in the UK a heating system breaks down.
Boiler cover makes sure you won't be left in the cold by problems with your boiler, radiators or central heating system.
Boiler cover includes the cost of an engineer to come and repair your system, covering both the labour and parts. Some plans give you unlimited cover; others are capped at a maximum cost per year, so you will have to pay anything over this amount.
uSwitch compares boiler cover from several UK suppliers. In just ten minutes we'll show you the best prices, and either switch your cover for you or put you in touch with the company offering the deal you want.

What you'll need to have ready
- your postcode
- the type and make of your boiler
- details of any boiler cover you already have
We can only compare boiler cover for your home if you:
- own your home
- live in a flat or house (not a bedsit or mobile home)
- have fewer than 7 bedrooms
- don't use your home for business
Step 1: your postcode and contact email
You tell us the postcode of the address where you want the boiler cover - so that we can check availability of the different providers in your area. You can also give us your email address so we can contact you if we need to.
Step 2: your home and heating system
Next we'll take some details of your home, your central heating and any existing boiler cover.
You'll find that there's a wider choice of plans if you have a gas boiler rather than an electric or oil-fired heating system.
Step 3: choose your cover
Tell us whether you want to cover your whole central heating system or just your boiler and its controls. Full cover usually includes repairs to things like radiators and pipework.
This is also where we ask the make of your boiler and how old it is. If it's more than 15 years old you will find your choices of cover are limited.
Step 4: your results
We'll show you a table of your results for boiler cover, telling you:
- who provides the cover
- how much it will cost in the first year
- the maximum amount covered in each year
- what's included in the cover
To see more detail about a selection of the products on offer, tick them and choose "Compare".
If you can apply for a product through uSwitch, you will see a "Continue" button. This will start the application process.
If we can't offer the product on our site, you'll see a link that says "Enquire", which will explain how to get in touch with the supplier.
Step 5: apply for cover
When you've chosen your boiler cover and clicked "Continue", you enter our secure application process. We'll ask for some more detailed information about you, such as your exact address and your contact details. The form normally takes 5-10 minutes to complete.
This is also where you'll enter your payment details: you can usually choose to pay monthly by direct debit or in a single one-off payment.
You then confirm your switch. When you've done this:
- we send you a confirmation email with the details of your new cover
- your new provider will contact you to let you know when your cover will start
Remember that you're probably not covered immediately. Most providers have an initial no-claim period of around 30 days.
You have a cooling-off period in which you can cancel your order. The length of the period differs for each provider, so check your contract.
What happens afterwards?
How long does it take to get cover?
When your payment is processed, there will usually be an initial no-claims or waiting period of about 30 days.
This will be different for each plan, so look for details when you compare boiler cover on uSwitch.
I've already got boiler cover with my energy supplier. Can I switch my boiler breakdown cover without moving my gas and electricity?
Yes, you can switch your boiler cover to another provider without having to switch your energy provider. In fact, you are free to get your boiler cover from whichever provider you like.
If I switch my energy supplier, will I lose my boiler cover?
No. Your boiler cover is completely independent of your energy supplier, so you are free to switch your gas and electricity as often as you like. It will not affect your boiler cover at all.
How much can I claim?
It depends on the cover you get. Some plans provide unlimited cover, whereas others are capped at £1,000 or £1,500 each year.
When you compare boiler cover on uSwitch, the results will show you the maximum amount you can claim in each year.
