*The "up to" speed displayed in Mb is the maximum possible speed you are likely to receive for this product. The actual speed you will get depends on your cabling, your area and (with non-fibre optic products) time of day and how far you are from the telephone exchange. Most providers will tell you the likely speed you will receive when you begin your online sign up - this may differ from the speed displayed in the table.

4G mobile broadband explained

The arrival of 4G mobile broadband in the UK is the most exciting thing to happen in telecommunications for years and is transforming the nation's internet habits.

Like 3G, 4G mobile broadband technology is delivered by mobile phone networks. But that's where the similarity ends.

4G is much, much faster than 3G. That means you can download movies and music and stream content faster and more smoothly than ever before.

And of course, pages load in seconds too, so you can more of what you want to do while you're on the move.

How much faster is 4G broadband than 3G?

That depends on your provider and your location. However, the fastest service from EE provides a service of up to 80Mbps. By way of comparison, the fastest 3G service in the UK offers a headline connection speed of 21Mbps.

As with 3G, however, the speed you get depends on the strength of the 4G signal in your location, as well as the number of people on your network at any one time. The more people using 4G in your locality, the slower your connection.

What do I need to get 4G?

To sign up for 4G, you'll need to be in area covered by a 4G network. The good news is that with EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone all either constructing and expanding their own networks or using a rival carrier's, 4G is much more available than it was even a few months ago.

The result is that if you live in a town or city, you're very likely to be able to get 4G. If you're one of more rural parts of the country you may not be eligible for 4G just yet, however.

In terms of equipment, you only need a 4G compatible dongle or a Mi-Fi, which will be part of your bundle when you sign up to a 4G mobile broadband contract. What you can't do is access 4G by placing a 4G SIM card in a 3G dongle, so you'll need to pay for a new one.

Surely 4G comes at a price?

With most things in life, you get what you pay for. And that's a maxim that applies to 4G broadband too. Right now, 4G dongle and MiFi deals are on the whole more expensive than the 3G equivalents with the same monthly allowances.

Whether you think that the extra speed you get with 4G justifies the extra outlay is a decision you'll have to make for yourself.

Which networks offer 4G?

At the start of the UK 4G revolution EE was the sole UK carrier to provide a 4G mobile broadband service.

However, rival 4G broadband offerings have since been launched by Three, O2 and Vodafone, so there's now much more choice. And more scope to bundle 4G with other services that you take too.

I'm a 4G customer in an area where there's no 4G. What happens?

In areas where 4G is not available or the 4G signal is weak, 4G dongles and MiFis will automatically switch to the network's 3G signal. This many not be as fast but it will ensure you stay online seamlessly and, if you're using your connection for less demanding web activities, you may not even notice the difference.

4G dongle or MiFi?

Both dongles and MiFis get you online with a mobile internet enabled device over 4G. However, while a dongle plugs into the device you're using can only be used to get online with a single device at any one time, a MiFi provides a localised wireless mobile broadband connection that can be shared by multiple 4G compatible gadgets simultaneously.

If you think you'd like to be able to share your 4G mobile broadband service with friends and family and all get online at the same time, a MiFi may be right for you.

4G tablet deals

SIM only 4G contracts are available and operate in much the same way as SIM only mobile phone deals. That is, you sign up for a pay monthly deal or on a rolling one-month contract and you'll be guaranteed a certain amount of monthly 4G mobile internet usage. To get online, you need only place the 4G SIM provided by your network into your tablet's SIM card slot.

Does superfast 4G broadband mean I no longer need home broadband?

Because 4G broadband delivers speeds that are comparable with traditional ADSL broadband, it's tempting to think that if take a 4G service you no longer need home broadband. However, that's not strictly the case.

This is because 4G mobile broadband usage allowances are typically much less generous than fixed line home broadband. That means you can easily run through your allowance, even if you're a fairly moderate internet user. To avoid that, it still makes sense to retain your home broadband connection and reserve your 4G connection for when you get to get online while you're out and about.
