ADSL2 broadband explained
ADSL2 broadband adds certain features to regular ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) technology that boosts performance and improves data rate and reach. ADSL2 and ADSL2+ broadband offers speeds of up to 24Mb download and 1Mb upload, depending on location.
The niche that this technology fills is the growing market for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and VoD (Video on Demand) services which require increased bandwidth to stream live video without subjecting the customer to pauses while the program or film downloads over slow connections. To find our more about IPTV, see our what is IPTV guide.
Broadband speed is dependent on location:
ADSL2 broadband is currently for the most only available in urban areas. Insert your postcode into our postcode checker to see if you can access this speedy connection.
The broadband speeds that you can expect depend on the distance of your house from the DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) - the closer you are the faster your connection.
See our fast broadband page for more speedy packages.
In this way, the DSLAM allows telephone companies and internet service providers to provide fast copper wire internet connection technology (DSL) with the fastest backbone network technology (ATM, asynchronous transfer mode).
More on ADSL2 broadband
- ADSL2 broadband also has better diagnostic tools that allow service providers to monitor the quality of your connection and prevent service problems.
- Luckily both ADSL2 and ADSL2+ broadband can run on the regular ADSL lines. However, you may need to purchase a bespoke router in order to avail yourself of ADSL2+.
To find out more about ADSL2 broadband see our what is ADSL2 broadband guide.
Don't live in an urban area? Compare all the bestselling broadband packages on the market on our home broadband page.
