*The "up to" speed displayed in Mb is the maximum possible speed you are likely to receive for this product. The actual speed you will get depends on your cabling, your area and (with non-fibre optic products) time of day and how far you are from the telephone exchange. Most providers will tell you the likely speed you will receive when you begin your online sign up - this may differ from the speed displayed in the table.
Fast broadband packages explained
Fed up with being in the broadband slow lane? The good news is that there's no longer any need to be. Faster broadband packages that can transform your internet experience is now available all over the UK.
If you're fed up of slow speeds and want to get the best out of the internet, sign up for a faster broadband deal today!
Which providers offer faster broadband?
The UK's fastest broadband provider is Virgin Media, whose premium broadband products offer guaranteed speeds of 50Mb and 100Mb. The bad news is that these lightning quick broadband packages, which are made possible by Virgin Media's specially built fibre optic broadband network, are only available in certain areas, typically in urban locations.
However, just because you're not in one of the areas served by Virgin Media doesn't mean you can't necessarily get a faster broadband connection that you've already got. Using a combination of fibre to the cabinet and ADSL technology, BT's Infinity product offers a top speed of 40Mb, making it easily comparable to Virgin Media's 50Mb service.

But that still doesn't rule out you getting a faster broadband service. This is because latterly broadband suppliers have been maximising standard ADSL networks - these are in place all over the country - so that they can deliver a better and faster connection. As a result, you can now get an ADSL broadband product offering speeds of up to 20Mb from BT, Virgin Media, Orange and Sky. Meanwhile, TalkTalk and Be can provide an even faster ADSL service of up to 24Mb.

Will I get the faster broadband speed I was promised?
If you choose a fibre optic broadband package from Virgin Media, you are guaranteed to get the 50Mb or 100Mb speed advertised. This is the great advantage of fibre optic broadband technology.
Opt for an ADSL broadband product, however, and you can sometimes find you get a broadband speed that's below the maximum connection speed that is claimed by the provider. This is because when broadband is delivered over older ADSL technology, the speed of a connection is affected by how far you live from the telephone exchange.

Why do I need faster broadband?
Faster broadband can transform your internet experience beyond recognition. With some faster broadband bundles you can download music and movies in a fraction of the time that you're likely to be used to. This brings an end to the days of having to wait hours to see the movie you want and means you've got much more flexibility to see what you want, when you want.
Faster broadband is also great if you're a fan of online gaming. With a faster broadband package, you can expect a much smoother, slicker and altogether more enjoyable gaming experience.
