TalkTalk/Carphone Warehouse: Fibre optic network 'progessing well'
Posted 20th December 2007 at 4:38pm by Alex Buttle
The construction of TalkTalk/Carphone Warehouse's fibre optic network is progressing according to plan, the ISP has announced.
Carphone announced plans for its own network last year and hired Infinera to undertake installation.
Now Paul Jackson, head of transmission at the company, has confirmed that work on the optical backbone of 36 points of presence is complete.
He told lightreading.com: "We've pretty much built a national network in eight weeks since signing the contract, and we can increase capacity pretty much at the touch of a button. It has taken the guesswork out of the optical network."
The fibre optic network, which is capable of delivering super-fast broadband, is intended to give Carphone an edge in the increasingly competitive UK broadband market.
By building its own network, Carphone will no longer be forced to use the system owned by BT, to whom it pays £15 million annually in rental charges.
