BT defies the doubters with broadband upgrade

That’s because the UK’s largest broadband provider has today announced it is upgrading its customers’ connections to up to 20Mb. And better yet, it’s doing it for gratis. That’s nothing. Nada. No charge. Free to you, Mister.

The BT Tower, London

Obviously, this is great news for consumers who’ll be able to stream content faster, as well as download to their heart’s content. And it’s arguably an even bigger boon for the government as it prepares to unveil its Digital Britain report.

But it’s perhaps BT who is the real winner here. After facing catcalls recently over throttling bandwidth for iPlayer users, today’s announcement is the perfect riposte to its critics.

And how is it that this defies "doubters"? Throttling means that BT are claiming one speed e.g. 20Mb and delivering another e.g. 1Mb if you actually measuring it.

So they can offer anything they like 100Mb or 1000Mb if they don't actually have to deliver

Great news. Maybe we'll get up a couple of places in the World ratings chart, i.e not the bottom!!

I would like to get somewhere close to 8mb, as I am less than 1 mile from the telephone exchange. My BT hub shows around 4mb, but all line testers return around 2mb, I wonder why. What chance at 20mb!!!!!!!!!

Upgrade improvements? Having a laugh aren't you? I've had a very fast connection for 5 years, no complaints. Since the day they upgraded the line on 17/07/2009 (which they stated the lines would only be interrupted for 10 minutes) I have had a god awful service, the second I start a download from iTunes or anything else my connection to all else barely moves, takes up-to a minute to access goggle! And all BT try to tell me is that it must be my wiring. No problem for 5 years until the day they upgrade and they try to tell me it's my problem!? Seems they have screwed my bandwidth I guess!? My line tests at 8mb they say... probably does it your sending your only sending 100k of data

I have had the same experience with Tiscali as Anthony. Suddenly, in August 2009, my line speed dropped by 50% and more, sometimes it was faster on narrow band! "Its because you are so far from the exchange" was the excuse.

I was not aware that the either the exchange or my house had moved. "It must be the house wiring, we'll check it out", no change. Since then there has been two months of "we will investigate". No change!

It’s no better on cable. I had a rock solid 2Mbps on Virgin until I was upgraded to 10Mbps now I’m lucky to get 1Mbps. I even have to watch iPlayer in low bandwith. I need a good ADSL provider!

No matter what others say, I think it is still interesting and useful to improve some minor things.
