Subscribers to Virgin Media's broadband TV deals have the chance to take up a new version of the firm's set-top box, it has been announced.

The company is making its new V HD Box available to new and existing customers at a one-off cost of £49 plus installation – a move which the firm claims will make high definition content more compatible to consumers.

As well as being more energy efficient than previous models, ownership of the set-top box is retained by Virgin Media, so subscribers do not face any repair or call-out charges.

Cindy Rose, Executive Director of Digital Entertainment at Virgin Media, said the box would be ideal for those want to enjoy HD without facing extra monthly fees.

She added: "We think our superb range of TV content gives our customers a real choice and makes Virgin Media the best value TV offering available."

Virgin Media recently announced that both Sci Fi HD and ITV1 HD will be launched on its TV service in the coming weeks.

It doesn't compare to Sky. They have 37HD channels and will have 41 by the summer and 50 by winter. Plus the Sky HD box has 185 hours recording time, unlike Virgin which is slower to move and also only has 75 hours.

Sky wins hands down, plus Sky has 3D built-in.

And don't forget that Sky are bringing out their 1terrabyte box as well. That means mucho more record time.

All they need to do is sort out their Sky Anytime. Apart from the movies, it's a very random selection. They should take heed of many customers and perhaps add iPlayer-esque content.
