Apple is unlikely to issue a further update to its iPad tablet before the end of 2011, it has been reported.

Rumours circulating earlier this year had suggested than an iPad 3 could hit the shelves in time for Christmas, but cold water has been poured on this claim.

DigiTimes quoted an unnamed iPad component manufacturer, who stated that planning for the third-generation tablet version remains in its "initial stages".

The industry source said it was "unlikely" that Apple will deviate from its usual strategy of annual product refreshes by rushing a new iPad to market.

Apple has had its hands full in recent weeks with the launch of the iPad 2, with demand for the second-generation tablet exceeding supply.

Consumers around the world have been faced with lengthy delays for the device, which offers both mobile and wireless broadband capabilities.

A number of UK internet service providers, including Orange and 3 are offering iPad 2 tablets with mobile broadband deals.
