The next generation of the Apple iPad is likely to be equipped with 4G connectivity for super-fast broadband, it has been suggested.

Writing for Metro, James Day suggested that a launch date for the new tablet - reported to be in production in Japan - could be announced as soon as next month.

"A high-resolution 2048x1536-pixel display, 4G connectivity, an A6 processor, USB 3.0 and NFC technology - the short-range radio used for contactless payment - are all rumoured," he said.

Mr Day suggested that the iPad 3 may even come equipped with 3D technology - but it is the prospect of rapid mobile broadband speeds which are set to excite many users.

4G mobile broadband may not be available yet in the UK, but Ofcom is set to stage a 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum auction this year to set the wheels in motion.

Mobile broadband providers will be able to bid for 4G radio spectrum, enabling them to deliver faster download speeds and increased coverage from 2013.
