Households and businesses in Uppingham, Leicestershire, will have access to some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, it has been reported.

Gigaclear has announced plans to upgrade its network - managed by Rutland Telecom - in the market town to deliver 1Gb download speeds.

The firm is to deploy fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband services in the town.

Ron Simpson, Secretary of community partnership Uppingham First, said plans for the hyper-fast broadband network have been in the pipeline for 12 months.

"The new FTTP network will help ensure Uppingham’s future as one of the UK’s most desirable market towns in which to live, work, play and visit," he stated.

"Particularly attractive to the local taxpayer is the fact that the network will be built using only private investments."

Mr Simpson said the Uppingham First partnership expects the new broadband network to bring "substantial economic and social benefits" to a vibrant community.
