UK broadband provider TalkTalk was "busier than ever" over the Christmas and new year period, it has been claimed.

The firm reported peak data traffic of 557 Gigabytes per second on January 1st, as consumers' broadband demands reached record levels.

TalkTalk said it is handling more than twice as much data as two years ago - averaging over 500GBps over the festive period, reports ISPreview.co.uk.

Clive Dorsman, Chief Technology Officer at the firm, said some of the increase was due to customers downloading updates for new devices.

"TalkTalk’s Next Generation Network is already installed at 2,695 exchanges and covers 93 per cent of the population," he explained.

"That's three times as many exchanges as BT’s 21st Century Network and twice as many as Cable and Wireless, now part of Vodafone."
