American Express credit cards

American Express UK is the British arm of the American Express Company. They are one of the world’s largest financial organisations, with a base in New York City. The company has been ranked as the 22nd biggest brand in the world by Money Week. Also known as Amex, they provide credit cards and charge cards to customers across the United Kingdom. Their UK headquarters is at the heart of London, on Buckingham Palace Road.

The history of American Express goes back a long way, to the days when a credit card would have seemed like science fiction. They were founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1850 as an express mail delivery company. They first moved into the financial sector in 1882, when they launched a money order system, in rivalry to the US Post Office money orders. In 1891 they launched the world’s first traveller’s cheques.

They launched their charge card in the U.S.A in 1958, although they had considered it over a decade earlier. These first cards were printed on paper, with the world’s first plastic cards appearing in 1959. Charge cards had to have their balance paid in full at the end of the month, but in 1987 they launched the Optima as their first credit card offering.

American Express now offer a wide range of credit cards in the UK, each with different incentives, different interest rates, and different terms and conditions. Obtaining a card is subject to credit checks and the applicant’s current financial status.

They offer prestigious gold and platinum cards, as well as a range of business charge cards. Applicants have to be 18 years or over, be resident in the UK, have a current account, and have a clean credit history.
