Halifax merged with the Bank of Scotland in September 2001 to form the Edinburgh-based HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland) Group. HBOS became part of the Lloyds Banking Group - the largest retail bank in the UK - in January 2009. However, making a balance transfer between credit cards within Lloyds Banking Group brands is generally permitted as they are viewed as separate credit card companies.
