"We were struggling..."

Like many people, Ian Knight and his family were finding things tough because of the credit crunch.

'It wasn't like I was buying plasma TVs - we were struggling" said Mr Knight, "I was having to pay for day-to-day essentials with my credit card and I had built up a balance of £2,900."

Although he was paying off £50-60 a month, around £25 of this was just going towards the interest and his balance wasn't shrinking as fast as he would have liked, so he wanted to do something about it.

"Switching was easy..."

Mr Knight received an email from uSwitch, which showed our top 0% balance transfer cards, which got him thinking about moving his balance.

After comparing the deals on offer, he chose the Virgin Money credit card which offers 0% interest on balance transfers for 16 months. The site showed that it was the longest interest free period on the market, so Mr Knight could be confident he was getting the best deal.

"The switch was straightforward, and the whole process was quick and easy - I'd recommend it to anyone," said Mr Knight.

"It bought us some breathing space..."

After switching to Virgin, Mr Knight's credit card balance is now interest free until January 2010.

"It bought us some breathing space until I get my bonus in January 2010 and can pay off the whole thing" he said.

In the meantime, he's repaying £25 a month - all of which going towards shrinking his balance, rather than paying off the interest alone.
