How to shrink your energy bills - Ann Robinson, uSwitch Energy Expert.
I'm Ann Robinson, I'm an energy expert at uSwitch.com and I'm here to save you money on your bills.
Half of us have never switched our supplier and we're losing out on savings of up to £350.
First of all, there are two things to think about when you're saving money on energy - first is to get the best possible deal for you and the second is to look at ways in which you can use less energy.
Step1 - Switch to the best deal.
Now the best deals are quite simple to remember. They are:
- Buy your gas and electricity together, with what we call dual fuel.
- Pay by direct debit - there are significant discounts for doing that.
- And finally, buy your energy online. Some companies offer what I think is an extremely good deal for buying online and also giving you the opportunity to manage your own energy because what you're able to do is read your meter, let the company know what your meter readings are, so that you're not caught out, you don't find yourself in debt, you're not relying on estimated bills and you become more conscious of the energy you use
Step 2: Use less energy.
Now the second way of saving money is use less energy, and there are two things I want to talk about:
- Get an energy efficiency grant. First of all you pay £38 on your gas and electricity bills which goes into a big pot that the gas and electricity companies themselves hold. You can apply to them for help on energy saving measures. The two big ones are loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. You can save up to 25% of your energy use by taking those two simple measures.
That's not all, just by doing some very simple housekeeping things you can save an awful lot of money.
- Use energy efficient light bulbs. For example, don't use ordinary light bulbs, use the energy efficiency light bulbs, they can save £40 per year.
- Switch appliances off. Don't keep all your appliance on standby - they're using electricity all the time they are on standby, so don't do it, switch off.
What I've been trying to do is to give you some pointers about how to save money. You don't have to follow all of these, if you follow just some. But certainly try and get the best deal. It'll put a smile on your face because you will see your bills drastically reduced.
