Developed by Altaeros Energies, the Buoyant Airborne Turbine (BAT) is a revolutionary new type of wind turbine, which floats in the sky and consequently takes advantage of powerful high altitude winds.

The turbines are held in place by a solid helium filled framework and industrial strength cables, which are connected to a ground unit.

Technology hunts strongest wind currents

The BAT differs from more traditional wind turbines as it has not been developed to provide electricity for power grids, but rather to create cheap energy for isolated areas and where power supplies are temporarily cut.

The technology is also able to detect where wind power is strongest and can raise or lower the turbines to best take advantage of this.

Low cost solution to providing power to isolated installations

Speaking on the flexibility of the technology, Ben Glass, Altaeros Chief Executive Officer said: “The BAT can be transported and setup without the need for large cranes, towers, or underground foundations that have hampered past wind projects.”

The technology will this week be tested as an alternative to diesel generators in a number of small Alaskan villages.
