npower has announced that it is to cut electricity prices by 8%, which will reduce the average electricity bill by £35.

The price cut, which will come into effect on 31st March 2009, is the sixth cut to be announced by suppliers in recent weeks.

The average household bill for a dual fuel npower customer will drop from £1,291 to £1,256 - £348 or 48% higher than its average bill of £908 in January 2008.

Although npower is the last provider to drop its prices, only British Gas customers have seen the benefit of the price decreases so far, with its reductions coming into effect on 19 February.

Will Marples, energy expert at uSwitch.com, commented: "By the end of March, the majority of consumers will be seeing some small benefit from lower wholesale energy prices. But it has taken time and price cuts have averaged out at 4.3% or £56, which will only make a small dent in household energy bills."
