Uswitch comments on launch of Huawei’s P8 and P8 Max mobile phones
Commenting on today’s launch of the Huawei P8 and P8 Max in London Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Launching a handset and a plus-sized phablet version at the same time is a tried and tested formula by Apple and Sony – so Huawei’s standing on the shoulders of giants with today’s double launch.
“The Ascend P8 is a stunning-looking, ultra-thin phone that packs the kind of features seen in a top flagship handset, including a high quality camera that helps users take historically difficult shots, excelling in both low and bright and even facing the sun.
“Features range from the bizarre – a selfie beautification photo function that apparently renders people completely unrecognisable – to the extremely useful, including dual antennas that result in 50% fewer dropped calls and an increased call connection rate.
“But, in spite of its top-of-the-range specs, the P8 is set to compete in the more affordable mobile marketplace. It’s likely to be priced very competitively for the simple reason that Huawei has never had the uptake from UK retailers and networks that it needs to sell big volumes here.
“Although Huawei has long manufactured successful phones for networks under other names, it’s not a well-known brand in the UK, and so it faces an uphill battle to assert itself in the British market. With previous models, adoption was an issue with only a few networks and retailers offering the Ascend P7 to consumers.
“Time will tell if 2015 is the year of the Huawei in Britain. It has performed well overseas, and with a handset as strong as the P8 there’s no reason why it shouldn’t succeed here if priced right.”
