npower to cut standard gas prices by 5.2%

  • npower reduces standard gas prices by 5.2%, cutting £32 from the average gas bill – but not until 28th March

  • The cut follows a 5.4% reduction by ScottishPower to standard gas prices effective 15th March, announced last week

  • EDF Energy remains the only big six supplier to not have made two reductions to standard prices since the start of 2015

  • Uswitch.com continues to call for standard dual fuel plan cuts from the big six of at least 10% – around £120 – more in line with low wholesale energy prices.

npower has today announced a 5.2% cut to standard gas prices, following reductions announced last week by ScottishPower. Commenting on the news, Uswitch.com Director of Consumer Policy, Ann Robinson, says: “Consumers will be exasperated at yet another small cut from the big six which, quite frankly, is too little too late. Hard-pressed customers should be seeing double-digit cuts to bills, to help stay warm and keep the lights on this winter.

“Is there a chance that EDF Energy will do the right thing and announce a price cut that properly reflects the fall in wholesale prices?

“Token-gesture price cuts demonstrate that loyalty simply doesn’t pay. Standard tariff customers should make their own price cut by switching to a cheaper fixed deal, saving more than £320 a year.”
