Bluetooth mobile phones in depth
Bluetooth mobile phones offer you another form of connectivity, turning your phone into more than just a standard handset for calls and texts.
With a Bluetooth mobile phone you can connect your mobile to your computer and other mobile devices to transfer information. This gives your mobile phone a whole new range of functions.
You'll find that all sorts of devices from laptops, to games consoles and digital cameras feature Bluetooth, making a Bluetooth mobile phone a really useful gadget for multimedia and entertainment connectivity.
What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a form of wireless connectivity; it's a technology that works over short distances to allow computers and other devices to connect to each other.
Bluetooth mobile phones and other Bluetooth devices can connect with each other up to a distance of about one hundred metres. This means that Bluetooth is a great way to share contact details and other important information on your phone with your friends without spending a penny!
Bluetooth uses radio technology which cuts up data into small pieces and sends them across many frequencies. This technology is called frequency-hopping spread spectrum.
Bluetooth is not the same as Wi-Fi. Although both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are radio technologies, they use different frequencies and protocols. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do not interfere with each other and are not interchangeable. This means that you cannot use a Bluetooth mobile phone to connect with a phone that only supports Wi-Fi and vice-versa.
What can Bluetooth mobile phones do?
Transferring files with Bluetooth mobile phones
Transferring music or image files from one phone to another takes a matter of seconds if you (and your friend) have a Bluetooth mobile phone. Provided both the Bluetooth mobile phones have their Bluetooth functions enabled, you should be able to transfer a whole range of data files at the touch of a button.
You can also use your Bluetooth mobile phone to transfer information from your contact books and exchange calendar entries or business cards, which can come in very handy if you rely on your mobile phone for business.
Using a Bluetooth mobile phone hands-free headset
With a Bluetooth mobile phone you can connect to a Bluetooth mobile phone hands-free headset, which means that you can talk on your phone without even picking it up. This is really great if you want to use your mobile phone on the go, especially while driving.
Bluetooth wireless headsets are small and lightweight and are generally worn on just one ear, making them a really discreet way to walk around with your mobile phone and chat away.
Using your Bluetooth mobile phone as a wireless modem
If your laptop has Bluetooth then you can use your mobile phone as a wireless modem. If your laptop does not have Bluetooth but you want to try this out with your new Bluetooth mobile phone, you can get your hands on a decent Bluetooth USB dongle for around £8.
With a Bluetooth USB dongle, you will be able to connect your laptop or PC to any other Bluetooth devices, including your mobile phone. These tiny devices are a great way to ensure you can link your Bluetooth mobile phone with any computer, wherever you are.
