Motorola Milestone 2 details

The Motorola Milestone 2 is a follow-up to the original Milestone, better known as the Droid in the US, and is a much more functional device this time around than simply a cosmetic upgrade.

A 1GHz processor, which has become standard fare in Android handsets these days, sits at the heart of the device. Though unlike most Android kit, it also comes with 8GB onboard memory, in addition to a microSD slot for up to 32GB of removable storage.

The five-megapixel camera makes its return, but unlike the disappointing snapper of the predecessor, this one is capable of video recording in 720p resolution as well as streaming recorded clips over the home network with integrated DLNA support.

And with a 3.7-inch TFT display, the Milestone 2 has one of the biggest screens around to take advantage of the new HD credentials.

The physical keyboard, which was one of the poorer aspects of the original Milestone, has also been revamped with the bumpier keys for more comfort and ease of use. Gone is the clunky D-pad, which has been replaced with cursors instead.

The overall design is largely identical to the masculine older brother but is all round more pleasing to the eye with its navy blue and silver colour scheme.

In terms of software, Milestone 2 comes packed with Android 2.2 goodies, among which exist Flash 10.1 support and the inclusion of mobile tethering, which turns the handset into a local hotspot for up to five devices.

It also brings back an enhanced version of Motoblur, Motorola's custom skin, which amalgamates various social networking and messaging features on the device in seven customisable screens.

With its excellent camera, great software and a massive storage capacity of up to 40GB, the Milestone 2 is simply one of the best multimedia smartphones around.

More on the Motorola Milestone 2

While the likes of HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S continue the recent trend of compromising a physical keyboard for a slimmer, slicker design, the Milestone 2 sets a great example of how top-end smartphones can still combine the best of both worlds.

Even though the keyboard of the original Milestone did not do the handset justice, its successor redeems it more than ably and nowhere is this more evident than when typing a long email on the move, which makes the idea of going back to typing on a virtual keyboard absurd.

Those who still have concerns about the physical design being affected by the keyboard can rest easy as even with the slide-out keyboard, the Milestone 2 is almost as light as the keyboard-less XT720.

With a fresh coat of paint and smoother curves around the edges, the Milestone 2 looks great and feels even better in your hands.
