Network SIM only details
SIM only deals are those when you pay solely for a SIM card and provide your own handset. Latterly, they have become more popular with cost-conscious consumers because they can free you from lengthy contracts and save you considerable sums of money.
Here we’ll talk you through the advantages of SIM only deals over contract tariffs to help you decide if a SIM only option is right for you.
What is a SIM card?
A SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) is the chip in your mobile phone that stores information such as your contacts and your phone number. Swapping SIM cards between phones means that this information can be transferred between handsets.
What are SIM only deals?
Ordinarily, monthly contracts for mobile phones offer a new handset and a SIM card over a contract lasting 12 or 18 months. However, with SIM only contract deals, the customer pays only for the SIM and provides the handset themselves.
They then pay a monthly rate for a pre-determined amount of calls and text. Contracts are on a rolling basis, with customers given the option to renew it or end it every month.
Alternatively, you can opt for a pay as you go SIM only offer. Here, the customer also funds the cost of the mobile phone and pays for the SIM. However, rather than receiving a monthly bill, they instead buy credit in the form of top up vouchers and pay set rates for calls, texts and services.
What are the advantages of a SIM only deal?
With SIM only contract deals, the mobile phone network does not have to fund the cost of the handset. This means that they are able to offer customers a better value deal, allowing them to benefit from cheaper calls and text messages. Often you are able to get double the amount of airtime and SMS messages than you would do if you had opted for a monthly contract.
With typical SIM only deals having a minimum term of just one month, they also offer greater freedom and the option to switch network easily if you are not happy with the service you receive or have found a better deal elsewhere.
Pay as you SIM only offers offer the advantage that they are even more flexible than monthly contract SIM only deals, with customers able to stop using the SIM at any time simply by not buying any more credit. Another benefit of pay as you go offers is that they can often provide cheap international calls. However, typically people who are on pay as you go deals pay more for their standard calls than those on a monthly contract SIM only tariff.
