One of first Sony's phones without Ericsson is also a firm contender for one of the year's best Android handsets. With a smart, new version of Android and excellent music playback, the Sony Xperia U is positively packed with great features. And it offers instant access to the Sony Entertainment Network too and smart interchangeable plastic caps so you can customise your handset's look.

Sony is known for its screen technology. And the Xperia U is no exception. At its heart is a 3.5-inch display featuring the same Bravia technology that's normally only found in Sony TVs and delivers pin-sharp images to maximise your mobile media experience. That means the Xperia U is simply amazing for watching movies and playing games.

But that's not all. Thanks to the HDMI slot and TV dock (sold separately), you can plug the Xperia U into your TV and instantly turn it into a smart TV for browsing the web, checking your mails and accessing all the content you've got stored on your phone.

The Xperia U fits the bill as a camera phone too. On board,there's a great five megapixel snapper with face-detection and auto-focus that's just right for capturing life's spontaneous moments. And it's 3D capable too. There's also a secondary front-facing camera for making video calls.

As with all Android phones, this is amazing for apps. At the Android Market there are tens of thousands of titles to choose from, including games, business tools, keep-fit applications, fun diversions and much, much more. And many are completely free to download.
