4G phones allow you to surf the web, stream HD movies and download apps and videos much, much faster than 3G handsets. With super-fast mobile internet connectivity, 4G mobile phones are at the cutting edge of smartphone technology.

Which networks offer 4G?

Most of the largest UK carriers offer 4G, with Three, O2, EE and Vodafone all having launched a service.

However, coverage and the breadth of carriers' networks differs hugely. Where EE 4G is available in over one hundred cities, some rivals offer a skeleton service that's only really operating in a handful of locations.

What kind of speeds does 4G offer?

4G speeds dwarf the best available on 3G.

By way of example, EE is claiming theoretical, maximum download speeds of up to 60Mbps per second in select locations where it has carried out improvements to its extensive network.

The current theoretical top speed of 4G is much higher and stands at about 100Mbps. O2's trials of 4G mobile phone technology in controlled conditions in the UK have delivered about 90Mbps.

By way of comparison, HSPA+, the fastest 3G technology, is capable of maximum speeds of 21Mbps.

What is 4G LTE?

4G and LTE are terms that are used interchangeably in the UK. But they’re not the same. In reality LTE or Long Term Evolution is one of a few technologies that’s competing to be the dominant fourth-generation mobile internet network standard.

Will 3G phones accept 4G SIM cards?

In a word, no. Only the newest phones with a 4G capable radio chip can support 4G SIM cards.

Which handsets are 4G phones?

Some phones that support 4G are:

  • Apple iPhone 5C
  • Apple iPhone 5S
  • Apple iPhone 5
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Sony Xperia Z
  • HTC One
  • Nokia Lumia 920
  • Huawei Ascend P1 LTE
  • Nokia Lumia 820

How much are 4G phones?

4G mobile phones’ price points are comparable with the very best so-called 3G superphones.

Monthly 4G tariffs are usually no more than £5 more than their 3G equivalents.

Why should I choose a 4G phone?

4G phones don't just give you bragging rights as you show off their cutting-edge capabilities to friends. Although in our book that’s not something to be sneezed at.

The best reason to grab a 4G phone, though, is that you’ll be able to do more with your handset and really get the most out of the time you spend on the internet. Whether you're streaming video, accessing the web, downloading music or sending and receiving pictures, 4G makes everything smoother and faster.
