Which networks offer the iPhone 5s?

The iPhone 5S is up for grabs on 4G contract or on a 4G-ready deal with EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three. All four carriers also offer 3G contracts for the handset for a cheaper monthly outlay.

Orange and T-Mobile, EE's partner networks, also offer 3G iPhone 5s plans.

Virgin Media has yet to offer the iPhone 5s for sale or confirm plans to do so in future. And given that it has thus far never offered an iPhone, it's not thought likely to add it to its handset range.

Tesco Mobile is expected to make an announcement imminently.

iPhone 5s and 4G

Although, EE, Vodafone and O2 have 4G networks up and running in some form, with Three's set to land before the year is out, there are still chunks of the UK where a 4G service is unavailable whichever carrier you choose.

The UK's most extensive 4G network is EE's, which launched much earlier than its rivals and is expanding fast.

Do I need a 4G plan?

4G offers speeds that dwarf 3G speeds. That means if you want super-fast downloads, seamless streaming and a brillant browsing experience and you're in an area where 4G coverage is good on the network you've chosen, its probably worth paying out extra to get a next-generation service.

Conversely, if you're cost-conscious it might be worth shunning 4G for a 3G plan. If you decide you want 4G at a later date, it should be no problem to upgrade your contract.

What are the iPhone 5s's USPs?

What makes the iPhone 5s so sought-after? Check out our list of key specs below for a flavour:

  • Revamped 8-megapixel iSight camera
  • More powerful A7 processor
  • Touch ID fingerprint scanner
  • 4G support
  • Revamped camera app
  • iOS 7 operating system
  • FaceTime HD camera

Below we a few of its major selling points in a bit more detail.

Touch ID

Billed as the iPhone 5s's killer feature, Touch ID refers to biometric security technology that's embedded in the iPhone 5s's redesigned home button. It means that for the first time ever, you can unlock your iPhone simply by using your finger, with no need to remember passcodes.

Touch ID also allows you to authorise purchases made through iTunes and the App Store, bringing an end to the days of having to input a password each time you buy a new app, music track or eBook.

iOS 7

iOS 7 is the new version of Apple's iOS operating system. Completely redesigned, it also brings a host of new features. Among them is better multi-tasking, Control Centre for one-swipe access to key settings and fresh takes on apps, such as the revamped Safari browser.

Improved camera

To help you get better shots, Apple has added a 15%-larger sensor and increased the aperture to ƒ/2.2 That means you'll get more light for your shots, in turn making colours more vibrant and bringing your images to life.

Apple has also equipped the phone with a slew of filters, so you can experiment with camera effects. And to help less able photogaphers, there's the True Tone flash. This automatically works out how much light you need according to the conditions you're shooting in.

Because the iPhone 5s shoots 1080 HD video footage and features a 3X zoom and image stabilisation technology, you can also look forward to much better quality clips.

4G LTE support

iPhone 5s customers who pick up the handset on a 4G plan can expect network connection speeds that are on average five times faster than 3G. The upshot is that you'll be able to do a lot more of whatever it is you like doing.

A7 chip

The A7 chip is the first ever 64 bit processor to feature on a smartphone. It's also the most powerful iPhone processor ever and ensure the phone zips through menus and home screens and jumps to attention when in use.

M7 processor

Best thought of as a coprocessor for the A7 chip, this helps out with the heavy lifting to ensure that the iPhone 5s doesn't slow down even when you're multi-tasking.

But the M7 more than that. Capable of measuring distances more accurately, it's set to clear the way for a new generation of brilliant sports and fitness-monitoring apps.

iPhone 5s contracts with benefits: what's out there?

Benefits probably shouldn't be a deal breaker when you're choosing a network for your iPhone 5s. But they can defintely help sweeten a deal.

Perhaps the pick of freebies up for grabs is on offer with Vodafone, which offers iPhone 5s customers a choice of the Sky Sports Mobile app or Spotify Premium for a year for no extra charge. For a limited time, Vodafone is also offering double data when you sign up.

O2 customers, meanwhile, benefit from the O2 Priority Moments scheme. This gets them access to exclusive offers at retailers, restaurants, cinemas, theme parks and gig venues.

iPhone 5s customers on EE, Orange and T-Mobile, all of which are part of the same group, get two for one cinema tickets and pizzas at Pizza Express and 99p movie downloads to watch on their smartphone.

As with other handsts, Tesco Mobile is expected to provide Club Card points for iPhone 5s customers.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 5c: which one is better?

The iPhone 5s is pitched as the top-of-the-range iPhone. As such it has a more complete set of features than the iPhone 5c, which is missing the likes of Touch ID and features a less powerful processor. It's also made from polycarbonate/plastic rather than the glass and aluminium of the iPhone 5s.

Conversely, the iPhone 5c is more wallet-friendly. And still offers iOS 7, 4G support and tons of apps to choose. And, of course, it comes in an eye-catching range of colour options.
