  Apple was founded in 1976 in Cupertino, California. In its 22-year lifespan, the company has become known for producing beautifully designed, high-end devices, such as its Macintosh range of computers, that have won cult audiences across the globe and have inspired hitherto unseen levels of customer loyalty.

  With the launch of the iPod, Apple reached a wider demographic. And so popular did the devices become that they went on to revolutionise the way that music is consumed and listened to. But the iPhone has proved even more of a hit. According to the company, during the iPhone's launch weekend some 270,000 iPhones were sold in the first 30 hours alone. And since then, it's sold tens of millions across the globe. In 2011, Apple launched the iPhone 4S just hours before ex-Apple CEO Steve Jobs passed away.

  Helping Apple's push into the mass market is its presence on UK high streets. The company operates more than 200 retail stores in eight countries, as well as the iTunes music download site and an online store where hardware and software products are sold.
