  Sony Ericsson manufactures a range of handsets, encompassing everything from multi-functional smartphones and excellent music-focused devices to high-end camera phones and simple, easy-to-use handsets.

  Employing Sony’s famous HiFi expertise, Sony Ericsson Walkman phones incorporate equalisers and the company’s patented MegaBass technology to give a rich and full sonic experience, banishing forever the spectre of tinny mobile phone sound. This, combined with bright, fashionable looks, the option to create playlists and the Shake to Select control method of phones such as the W980 and the W890 ensured that the Walkman phones made a real splash in the mobile phone market.

  According to industry estimates, the handsets have at times outsold iPods by some margin. Just as impressively, the W910i Walkman phone was recently awarded Best Handset at the GSM Association’s Global Mobile Awards 2008 for “redefining music on mobiles”.

  Similarly excellent are the Sony Ericsson Cybershot handsets which incorporate high-grade cameras, flash and auto-focus, Carl Zeiss lenses and great imaging functions to enable users to take excellent quality pictures on their mobile phones.

  Recently the company has made waves with the Xperia smartphones, which are so powerful that they are effectively mobile PCs. These run Google's Android operating system and have been among the most popular Sony Ericsson phones of recent years.

  History

  Sony Ericsson, a joint venture of Sony Corporation and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, was established in October 2001 and in the last seven years has been behind some of the most attractive and innovative handsets available. As of 2007, it was the fourth-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world after Nokia, Motorola and Samsung.

  In this time it has developed a series of award winning handsets, such as the K750i which received the TIPA Award 2005/2006 for ‘Best Mobile Imaging Device’ from a panel consisting of 31 leading European photography journals. In 2007 the GSM Association presented Sony Ericsson with the ‘Best 3GSM Mobile Handset’ award for the K800 Cyber-shot phone.

  In the mobile gaming market Sony Ericsson took the lead in 2004, being the first network to launch Java 3D-enabled handsets, and is forging ahead to bring 3D gaming to a wider audience.

  Sony Ericsson phones are sold as part of pay as you go and pay monthly contracts with all major mobile phone networks.
