Samsung’s SGH-B130 handset is retailing for just £4.95, in the latest sign of the plummeting cost of staying connected.

The launch comes after Asda earlier this year ran a deal whereby Sagem and Nokia phones were available for just £5.

Response to the April 2008 was overwhelming with 50,000 phones sold by the retail giant in a matter of weeks.

To qualify for the deal, customers have to buy £10 of airtime from Orange or T-Mobile when they buy the phone.

The Samsung SGH-B130, which has been branded the ‘credit crunch phone’ in some quarters, is expected to be similarly popular with consumers who are downsizing their expenditure on phones in the face of higher bills and mortgage repayments.

Andrew Harrison, UK CEO at The Carphone Warehouse said: 'When the bills are going up we’re committed to bringing our customers products they can afford with a credit-crunch-busting mobile for under a fiver.'

The Samsung SGH-B130 features a 1.52 inch colour screen, polyphonic ringtones, a web browser, GPRS and a USB port for importing data from a PC.
