iPhone owners are more inclined to use their phone for premium data services than owners of other manufacturers’ handsets, a new study has shown.

In a report conducted by research company comScore it was discovered that 79.7 per cent of iPhone owners accessed the internet with their handset during the three month period to January.

Meanwhile, 75.4 per cent of them use their Apple handset for sending and receiving e-mails.

By way of comparison, among consumers who own a smartphone not made by Apple just 48 per cent use their phone’s web browser and only 35.4 per cent use it for e-mailing.

The gap between usage patterns was less marked for social networking and web searching, with 54.8 per cent of iPhone owners using their phone to stay in touch in this way compared with 55.1 per cent of owners of other smartphones.

comScore analyst Alistair Hill said: "While the device’s ease of use is certainly contributing to the lift we see in mobile media consumption, the fact that the device requires a subscription package that includes an unlimited data plan is also a contributing factor.

"However, it is also important to note that while nearly all iPhone owners are consuming mobile media, the device is in the hands of only two per cent of mobile phone users in the UK."
