May 1st has been named as the official release date of the much-awaited HTC Magic phone on Vodafone.

The handset had been expected to appear this month on the network, but will now not be released until the first week of May.

Vodafone, which is the sole UK network set to carry the handset, has also opted to rename it the HTC Magic Pioneer.

The HTC Magic Pioneer will be the second phone which runs on Google’s Android operating system to hit the UK following the launch last year of the T-Mobile G1 phone.

It is expected to be followed closely by a third Android phone which was unveiled by Korean electronics giant Samsung last month.

Features of the HTC Magic Pioneer include a 3.2 megapixel camera, a music player and a host of inbuilt Google apps such as mail, search and maps.
