O2 to cut iPhone price?

Speculation is mounting that O2 is poised to cut the price of the iPhone 3G, ahead of the arrival of new handsets on the mobile phone network.

Mobile Today reports that O2 will cut tariffs from May so that the iPhone 3G will be available for free on £35 per month and £45 per month plans.

It is thought that this is aimed at reducing O2’s stockholding of the Apple phone ahead of new handset arrivals.

It is unknown whether these will include a new version of the iPhone, or whether these are just new smartphones from other mobile phone companies.

However, rumours that Apple is poised to unveil an upgraded mobile phone have been fuelled this week by the company’s announcement of a showcase at its headquarters in Cupertino in California.

News of developments comes as mobile phone news sites recently claimed that O2 is in contention to carry the Palm Pre in the UK. The phone has been touted by many as a viable iPhone challenger.

Official confirmation from either O2 or Apple has not been forthcoming.

    With the pending gen 3 iphone due in July 09,it is right that 02 sell current models cheaper to off set the cost for people then buying the new software to upgrade gen 2 iphone to the new version.

    O2 should cut prices on Iphones and tariff now, May is too close to Apples launch every year in June/July

    02 and apple should offer free upgrade software to existing Gen 2 customers,when Gen 3 is launched.
