Sony has moved to quash speculation that it is poised to end its joint venture with Ericsson.

Earlier this week rumours surfaced that the Japanese technology giant was looking to bring an end to the arrangement in the wake of falling handset sales.

Sony Ericsson’s mid-range and high-end phone sales are believed to have been especially hard hit by the economic downturn.

However, a Sony spokesman has now responded to the speculation with a statement claiming that the company will “continue to be committed to the joint venture”.

Rumours of a split in the partnership have also been fuelled by Sony’s apparent rejection of overtures from Ericsson to bring a PSP-branded, gaming-focussed mobile phone handset to market.

This prompted experts to predict that Sony is planning to go ahead with the phone on its own.

Sony Ericsson has this year unveiled a string of new high-end handsets as it looks to compete with Apple and Palm.

These include the Sony Ericsson Idou, which boasts a 12 megapixel camera and a touchscreen.
