Vodafone has launched a new micro blogging SMS service that lets customers send Twitter updates directly from their mobile phones.

In order to use the service, Vodafone customers send an SMS along with their tweet and direct it to 86444. The update to their page profile is carried out instantly.

Updates from Twitter members whom users are following on the site can also be received via SMS as well as @replies.

This is simply a case of turning on device updates on their mobile phone.

Initially Vodafone is offering the service for free, but plans to eventually include it in customer bundles.

Al Russell, head of mobile internet and content services at Vodafone, said: "We are delighted to be the only operator in the UK today to offer Twitter on SMS to our customers.

"Since we made social networks on the move both simple to use and great value, customers have flocked to using these services which have exploded in popularity."

It is expected that rival mobile phone networks will follow suit and begin offering SMS tweeting in weeks to come.
