Sony Ericsson is poised to unveil a follow-up to the multi-million selling Xperia X1, it has been suggested.

Ted Morgan, of Wi-Fi-based location software developer Skyhook Wireless, has revealed that the phone will appear imminently and will be called the Xperia X2.

According to reports, Skyhook is equipped with inside knowledge of Sony Ericsson’s plans having at one stage been in line to provide data mapping for the forthcoming phones.

However, Mr Morgan claims that his company was not awarded the contract and that instead location-based software on the device will come from Google.

Other details revealed by co-founder of Skyhook included the revelation that the Xperia X2 will run on Windows Mobile.

This is contrary to widespread rumours that the handset would be powered by Google’s Android operating system.

News of the Xperia X2 comes as Sony Ericsson is gearing up to launch a range of new mobile phones, including the 12.1 megapixel camera phone the Idou.
