Mobile phone network 3 has unveiled a new tariff which offers customers unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls for no charge.
Dubbed SIM Zero, the contract tariff will be available from June 17th, with customers who sign up only paying for non-Skype calls and SMS messages.
These are priced at 20p per minute, with text messages at 10p. A charge of 30p per MB of data usage also applies.
Under the terms of the offer, consumers sign up for a minimum of a month and are free to cancel at any time with one month’s notice.
Andy Nuttall, head of pay monthly at 3, said the deal will appeal to credit crunch-hit consumers who are looking to cut their outgoings and who may be wary of committing to a long-term contract.
He commented: “Where once the £35 a month contract was commonplace, prices are now falling. 3 launched the first £9 contract and other networks have followed suit. Some networks have gone as low as £5, but are handcuffing customers to a three-year commitment.
“We want to challenge the market and change mobile forever, that’s why we are offering a UK first - a contract that costs nothing but gives you free calls forever with Skype.”
Handsets currently available on standard monthly contract deals with the 3 network include the LG-KC910 Renoir and the Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra.
