LG is to open an application store next month, it has emerged, making the South Korean firm the latest mobile phone industry player to unveil a centralized online market for downloads.

The plan to go live with the store was revealed by LG’s chief executive officer Ahn Seung-kwon in an address to journalists, in which he also disclosed that the company’s key strategy this year will be to keep its handsets affordable.

He said: "We will focus on customized products. We don't have a plan to additionally release a phone with an AMOLED panel as such models are too expensive for general consumers to buy.

"The key thing to success for smart-phones depends on content. In line with the perception, LG will open 'LG App Store' in July to share contents for mobile applications."

New handset launches due from LG in the coming months include the LG GD910 watchphone as well as two as-yet-unnamed touchscreen handsets.

Meanwhile, yesterday saw the arrival on Top 10 Mobile Phones of a pink edition of the hugely popular LG KM900 Arena, which is available exclusively on Orange.
