Samsung has unveiled a brand new 12 megapixel cameraphone to challenge Sony Ericsson’s forthcoming Satio handset.

The new mobile phone from Samsung, dubbed the M8910 Pixon 12, features a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen as well as a touchscreen interface, an FM radio and GPS support.

Pictures taken with the camera, which houses a 28mm wide angle lens and offers auto-focus and fast image saving, can be uploaded instantly to social networking sites.

Samsung expects the M8910 Pixon 12 to begin shipping this month, meaning it will have at least a three month head start over the Satio which is not due for release until the fourth quarter.

The early appearance of Samsung’s handset is a blow to Sony Ericsson which had appeared on pin its hopes of bucking the slump in demand for new mobile phones on its high-end cameraphone.

JK Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile communication division, said: “The Pixon 12 is testament to how Samsung’s ongoing consumer research enables us to develop ground-breaking products that do not just meet but surpass our customers’ expectations.

“Speedy access to the camera mode, fast shutter speed and quick browsing are some of the key factors consumers are looking for in their mobile phone cameras.”

Earlier this month, Samsung announced that sustained demand for the Samsung F480 Tocco and i900 Omnia had helped it sell 20 million touchscreen phones worldwide.
